The Black Cat Press, Chicago, 1935. First edition. Black cloth boards with silver print on illustrated cover and spine. Binding is square and tight. Light edge wear along the tail edge of the boards. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Also inscribed and initialed on the page opposite the title page, “As a writer and a member of a minority group, it is my wish that this thin tome will do its share toward helping other minority writers flee from persecution to these comparatively safe American shores”. Chicago author’s first book. Influential voice of the Chicago and Harlem Renaissance during the 1940’s, later moving to Hawaii where he lived out the rest of his life. Rediscovered late in life by the Black Arts Poets group. A unique and influential title with a scarce signature and inscription.
